The Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) is unique to each vehicle and describes the manufacturer, series designation, body style, engine, year of production, assembly plant and production number. It should be riveted to the A-pillar, next to the door hinge, on the drivers side with special 'rosette' rivets.
Decoding The Numbers
The VIN consists of 13 numbers and characters if it was manufactured in America, or 12 numbers and characters if it was manufactured in Canada.
American built put the manufacturer 1st. For example: 138375Z100001 decodes this way: 1 / 38 / 37 / 5 / Z / 100001.
- First number indicates the manufacturer, 1 is for Chevrolet.
- Second and third numbers indicate the series designation, 38 is for a Malibu Super Sport w/ 8 cylinder.
- Forth and fifth numbers indicate the body style, 37 is for a 2 Door Sport Coupe.
- Sixth character indicates the year of production, 5 is for 1965.
- Seventh character indicates the assembly plant, Z is for Fremont, California.
- Eighth through thirteenth numbers indicate the sequential production number, 100001 is for 1st vehicle built.
